February is American Heart Month - Not Just for Cupids!

February is American Heart Month - Not Just for Cupids!

To warm us every winter, we celebrate Love with Valentine’s Day.  Symbols of Hearts abound. However, (buzz kill ahead) we need to be reminded that heart disease is the major killer. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), one person in the US Dies from cardiovascular disease every 36 seconds! That is 650,000 men, women and even children every year.

The reasons vary, identifying the key risk factors, and then making changes in lifestyle, diet, and medication can avoid the inevitable.

Key Risk Factors

Half of all Americans have one or more of these risk factors; high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, or a history of smoking.  These are exacerbated by physical inactivity, alcohol, excess body weight, age and genetic factors, family history, high salt intake and just sitting around watching TV, eating chips and drinking sodas or beer.

White House Proclamation 2022

in recognizing that heart disease affects all of us, the President put out the following in his proclamation to promote American Heart Disease Awareness; “As the leading cause of death for both men and women nationwide, heart disease devastates hundreds of thousands of families every year. During American Heart Month, we pause to remember the lives lost to heart disease and the families who mourn, and we reaffirm our commitment to preventing and treating this terrible disease that inflicts immeasurable pain and suffering.’

That is all well and good, but the best thing we can all do is become proactive in identifying risks and signs in ourselves and the people we love, and mitigating those effects so our loved ones do not succumb to a painful and unnecessary end.
