Five Summer Time Health Tips from the CDC

Summertime is a great time to get out, travel, and do more. However, you should always keep the local health risks, your safety, and the safety of your family, and the heat the comes along with summer in mind.

As summer draws near, the CDC is recommending ways for US citizens to stay healthy and safe while they travel and enjoy their summer vacations. Whether you are planning to go overseas, staying at home, or working outside, these tips offered by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention will help you.

CDC principal deputy director Anne Schuchat, MD said, “Summer is a great time to travel and enjoy the great outdoors, but it’s important to take simple, common-sense precautions.” The CDC provides helpful resources to keep your whole family safe on its website and social media. Today, we’re looking at the top five ways to stay safe.

1: Traveling Abroad

The CDC warns travelers looking to go abroad to check out their website first. You should look into the health and safety risks that are associated with the location that you are traveling in. Animal-related illnesses and drinking water contamination could mean following very different safety procedures that you might be used to.

With the rise in measles and malaria, it’s also essential to think about what shots you will need when you travel somewhere. Always tell your doctor where you plan to go so that you can make sure you are covered. Unsuspecting places like England, France, and Japan have been experiencing outbreaks so you could need a vaccine even if you think you don’t.

2: Swimming

Last month, Healthy and Safe Swimming Week were recognized. As such, it’s important to look at the role that pools and other bodies of water play during summer vacations. Each time you swim, the CDC recommends taking a look at the latest inspection score of the pool. This will help you from catching a disease and keeping you safe. Also, be sure to trust where you swim. The mishandling of pool supplies can result in an imbalance of the water and chemical issues with skin!

3: Summer Job Safety

When summer rolls around, many kids get their first job. However, children and adults between the ages of 15 and 24 have a higher rate of job-related injury compared to their adult counterparts. Young workers at summer jobs should take their time and say no when they think they’ve entered a dangerous situation.

4: Stay Cool

Heat kills more than 600 people in the USA each year. Therefore, it’s very important to prevent heatstroke and heat exhaustion while the summer months are in full swing. In states where heat is the worst, thinking about those under 4 and over 65 is vital. The young and old are much more susceptible to extreme weather than other age groups.

Make sure to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, and take breaks to make sure that you are staying safe in the summer months. Also, make sure that you are wearing sunscreen even if you are going outside for just fifteen minutes. Between 10 am and 4 pm, the sun is at its strongest so stay out of it if at all possible.

5: Child Safety

During summer, children are not at school, which means that you are in charge of watching them all day. Due to this, you must be observant and watchful to make sure they stay safe as they let out the pent-up energy they’ve had all year. Make sure they’re wearing the right seatbelt, eating right, and going outside. With technology, children are most distracted than ever and can easily skip a meal or stay inside all day if we aren’t there to remind them.

Staying safe during the summer is all about using common sense. If you’re outside sweating making sure you are drinking safe drinking water. If you travel, talk to your doctor to make sure that you know everything you need to stay healthy while you’re gone. Look after yourself and look after your family for a great summer vacation!
