Melatonin Effective in Treating Fibromyalgia Pain
There is no known cure for fibromyalgia but current research is looking into an effective treatment for fibromyalgia pain. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes widespread pain, chronic fatigue, and muscle tenderness. Current medications for the pain from fibromyalgia are not enough to give patients total relief. But, a recent clinical trial using melatonin for fibromyalgia pain shows promising results. Find out more about their melatonin research.

Recent Melatonin Research!
New findings published in the BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology journal showed that melatonin significantly reduced pain symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia. This research also found that melatonin appeared to effectively reduce pain associated with fibromyalgia when used alone or when combined with the antidepressant amitriptyline (Elavil).
Division of Patients!
This research demonstrated the effectiveness of melatonin in treating fibromyalgia. In this study, researchers divided patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia into 3 groups: a group that received amitriptyline, a group that received 10 mg of melatonin before going to sleep, and a group that received both amitriptyline and melatonin.
Pain Relief Results after Six Weeks!
After 6 weeks patients were asked to rate their pain on a scale of 0 to 10. The patients from the melatonin group reported fewer pain symptoms than the group receiving amitriptyline alone. The melatonin-amitriptyline group reported the highest amount of decreased pain symptoms.
What Does This Mean for People with Fibromyalgia?
These findings offer a great possibility for the nearly 3 million fibromyalgia sufferers in the world. With no current known cure, fibromyalgia can last months, years, or even a lifetime. The condition causes anxiety, depression, tenderness in the muscles, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, and fatigue. It affects roughly 8-10 times more women than men.
Other Benefits of Melatonin!
Considering that sleep disturbances are one of the most common reported symptoms of fibromyalgia, researchers studying the role of the hormone melatonin are testing to see how effective it is in returning the body’s circadian rhythm to normal function. Melatonin has also been associated with improvement in various types of chronic, long-term pain like inflammation. Researchers are hoping to further prove that melatonin increases the effectiveness and function of the body’s natural pain modulating systems.

Melatonin has a lot of medical benefits to offer. But the most significant effect it can provide is effective pain relief for people suffering from fibromyalgia pain. Although further research is still needed, researchers are hopeful that melatonin might be a better and more effective treatment of fibromyalgia than what currently exists.
