Methylation Issues

Methylation Issues

What is methylation? Methylation is the process of taking a methyl group, one carbon and three hydrogens, into your body to support some major body functions, such as DNA methylation, thinking, fighting off toxins, and turning genes on and off. Simply put, it is one of the "chemicals" in the body that needs to be methylated to avoid serious health issues, like diabetes, cancer, and autism. Keep reading to know more about what is methylation and its importance in your body.

What Is Methylation? | Issues Explained!

In this Article:

Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase!

Methylation issues are present in virtually all children along the autism spectrum. Methylation problems result in low glutathione. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant and plays a big role in detoxification. The most commonly known methylation issue is methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), a family of enzymes in the methylation pathway.

MTHFR 677 and 1298!

The most researched methylation enzymes are MTHFR 677 and 1298. The numbers refer to where the anomaly occurs on the gene. The 677 is the most researched of these anomalies. The anomalies are either heterozygous (dissimilar) or homozygous (similar). These anomalies come from our parents. A heterozygous anomaly means one of the pairs of genes is involved. In other words, there's one normal gene from one parent and one anomaly from the other parent. These anomalies are pronounced snips (SNPs). If it affects both genes, then it's homozygous.

Heterozygous and Homozygous!

If the anomaly is heterozygous, then the efficiency of the enzyme decreases by around 30 percent. And, if homozygous, then the efficiency can drop to 20 to 30 percent from the normal rate. There are usually multiple SNPs affecting methylation, and it's the combination of these SNPs that causes a major glutathione deficiency.
