DAO-Hist: What you need to know

DAO-Hist: What you need to know

Have you ever eaten a certain type of food or drank something and afterwards felt as though your head hurt and your stomach was aching? This may be a key indicator that you have a histamine intolerance and do not even know that you do.

What is the difference between a food intolerance and a food allergy?

The big thing that most people don’t realize is that you can have an intolerance to certain ingredients that are found in common foods and drinks and not be allergic to them. This means that each time you drink or ingest those ingredients, your body will start swelling in the bowels, causing discomfort and issues.

The good news is that there is an option that may help alleviate some of those annoying and uncomfortable feelings. That is where DAO hist just might become extremely important in your life.

What is DAO?

Those three little letters are actually a very important enzyme in your body that helps with your digestion. This enzyme actually breaks down histamine that can be found in food and drink, helping your body to not feel sick when you eat or enjoy certain foods. DAO stands for diamine oxidase.

If your body lacks DAO, this is where intolerance to histamine comes into play. Lacking in this enzyme will cause you to feel sick or actually become sick while eating various food ingredients.

DAO deficiency is related to digestive disorders and Gastrointestinal disorders, especially those associated with irritable bowel syndrome, such as constipation, diarrhea, satiety, flatulence, or swollen feeling. Dermatological disorders such as dry skin, atopy, or psoriasis. Soft-tissue pains usually diagnosed as fibromyalgia Chronic fatigue.

What are foods that are high in histamine?

While the following list of foods isn’t a complete list, here are a few of the more common food and drink items to be aware of.

  • Beer

Do DAO supplements help?

In a study published on WebMD, it was reported that a study using DAO supplements did yield positive results in the trial participants.

Those who suffered from migraine showed improvement in the length of their migraines, shortening by 90 minutes after taking DAO supplements for one consecutive month.

Those who reported gut issues did show some improvement in at least one area of their gut health. However, more studies are needed to be done on this since it was such a small and short sampling.

The initial study is showing good promise, and there are sure to be more studies coming out about this kind of option.

How we can help
