L-Carnitine is important for providing energy to muscles and has been described as a "conditionally essential" nutrient for humans. 95% of all carnitine stores in the body are found in muscle tissue. It carries fatty acids into the mitochondria of each cell, where they are metabolized to produce ATP, the body's prime energy fuel.

Your body produces many of the compounds it needs. Your body can produce carnitine from two amino acids, namely lysine and methionine. Carnitine is vital for allowing the body to transform fats into energy for the body. Carnitine also serves the function of an antioxidant that protects the body from potential damage that free radicals can cause.

Although the body can produce its carnitine, various factors can affect how much carnitine the body can produce and store. Angina and certain medications can, for example, reduce the amount of carnitine your body can make.
